Sappho: On Crushing My Vanity

Sappho's Cold Observation Regarding My Fame and Eternalness:

“When you are dead you will lie forever unremembered and no one will miss you” (5).

This passage terrifies me. It may be my big ego desires to live forever. It may be my inflated self-importance, my grandioseness. Whatever the case me be I do not like reading this. So what do I do? I re-read it. Again. And again. And again. Why? Precisely because it frightens me. I do not necessarily want my name to live on forever. That would be kind of cool. In a vain sort of way. But I do not like this phrase. I do agree with it. I just don’t want to.
