From Plato's The Symposium:
“Before then, I used to run around aimlessly. I thought I
was doing something important, but really I was in the most pathetic state –
just like you now! – thinking that philosophy was the last thing I should be
doing…But when I hear other kinds of discussion, especially the talk of rich
businessmen like you, I get bored and feel sorry for you and your friends,
because you think you’re doing something important, when you’re not. Perhaps
you regard me as a failure, and I think you’re right. But don’t think you’re a failure, I know you are.” (3-4)
I love this kind of talk. I truly do. With all my heart. If
you are not doing philosophy then what the hell are you doing? What kind of
savage beast wanders this earth without Reason? How dare you filthy animals
roam about in your disguises? You think we, the intelligent and thinking
people, will not notice that you merely appear to be humans? We are not fooled.
We can tell a Passion-driven emotion-monger when we see one. You cannot escape
us.
Even though we are busy. Very, very busy. We are busy
sitting and walking around thinking about stuff. What kind of stuff? Don’t ask,
you might not understand anyway. You’re busy doing other things,
non-philosophical things. Pathetic.
Anyway, I need to go and play some video games, you know,
take a break from philosophy. Philosophy is about talking down to others right?
That is exactly what I signed up for. I mean, wisdom and virtue and beauty and
truth…
I do hate business men though. And their talking habits and mannerisms.
I may not support every human being alive studying philosophy, but I certainly don't support ignorance. Especially when society overflows with stupidity. I do not want people to be geniuses. I just want them not to be happy-go-lucky morons. I do not want a society which celebrates its collective ignorance. But, hey, a society like that doesn't want me, so why the hell am I concerning myself with this?
I'm the problem. And I'm not even that smart. Problem signing off.
