An Empty Hell?

Afterthoughts on Dante's Inferno

One idea in class was to make a new version of Dante's Hell to see where we would put people. The funny thing about it is that classmates would not rank violence so lightly. I still do not understand. I'd leave violence right where it was in Dante. I don't think we are inherently violent. I think the tendency is there. I think it is survival-based. Just because some people use it for ill does not mean we should say that it is not in our nature to be violent. We have no right to be morally repulsed by violence. We can be morally repulsed by the reasons for the violence. But Violence is simply Violence.

Another argument was that the times have changed, a sort of that-was-then-this-is-now approach. For instance, we are a business oriented society and businessmen-like behaviour lands you really low down into Dante's Hell. Just because the majority of our society is this way does not mean that we should think it is more OK then it was before. This indicates that our society is more filthy now than it was before. This indicates a social illness wherein we are OK to have people acting in this fashion. I don't give two shits about how many people are this way, the sheer number of assholes does not make it OK to be an asshole. And we shouldn't move the Asshole level of Hell closer to the top because the world is full of Assholes.

What is my conclusion for what my Hell would like like? What I would do is this: I would make Hell. I would divide the circles however I wished. There would be many, many circles. Then I would leave Hell empty. I would not put anyone in there because nobody had a fair chance at it. Who am I to categorize people as sinners. When we see people's behaviour, good or bad, we are seeing their adaptations, adaptations to the various stresses of life. I'm not going to eternally punish someone because they tried in the only way they knew/learned how. But Dante will and I'm certain most people would. But hey, fuck you guys then you're all assholes.
